Clarifying Your Vision and Purpose

You're moving again. Your body is responding, building capacity. Now it's time to get clear on what's pulling you forward—not just what you're moving away from, but what you're truly building toward.

Part 1: What's Calling to You

1. When you imagine yourself fully engaged with wilderness again, what excites you most?

  • The physical challenge and capability?
  • The mental clarity and peace?
  • The confidence of being competent in wild places?
  • The connection to something larger than daily life?

2. What kind of adventures make you think "Yes, THAT is what I want to build toward"?

  • Don't worry about whether they seem realistic right now
  • Focus on what genuinely stirs something in you

3. Who are you when you're moving confidently through wild places?

  • What qualities emerge in you on the trail that you want more of?

Part 2: Your Deeper Why

4. Beyond the activity itself, what does wilderness represent in your life?

  • Freedom? Connection? A way of being you can't access elsewhere?

5. If you never achieved your biggest wilderness dreams, but continued moving and connecting with nature in ways available to you now, what would make that worthwhile?

6. How does your engagement with wilderness connect to what matters most in your life?

  • Your relationships, work, values, growth as a person?

Part 3: Your Vision

7. Imagine yourself 18 months from now, fully engaged in the kind of wilderness experience that feels most meaningful.

  • Where are you and what are you doing?
  • How does your body feel and what has it become capable of?
  • What's the pace and style of this adventure?

8. Complete this sentence: "Even when progress feels slow or confusing, I remember that..."

Your Switchbacks Vision Statement

Using your reflections above, complete this:

"I am building capacity to..." (what kind of adventures/experiences)

"...because wilderness offers me..." (your deeper why)

"...and this journey is making me someone who..." (qualities you're developing)

Staying Connected

What will remind you of this vision when motivation is low?

  • A photo, memory, or practice that reconnects you to this deeper purpose?

You're not just getting back to who you used to be. You're becoming who the trail is calling you to be.
